COVID-19:- Food of animal origin: how safe it is?
Three months ago, no one knew that SARS-CoV-2 existed. Now the virus has spread to almost every country, infecting millions of people whom we know about, and many more that we do not. The novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has been declared by the World Health Organization as a pandemic.
It has killed 31019+ people, 6,68306+ people are proven infected worldwide with the coronavirus (Sunday, 29-03-2020)
Corona virus scare in India remains at a peak and the paranoia seems to be spreading even faster than the virus.
The animal and animal products have been hit hard by the rumors of them being source of infection. The coronavirus scare has had a visible impact on the sale of mutton and chicken in the city. Those engaged in the business said people were avoiding consumption of meat, thinking it was a carrier of the deadly virus.
But experts said that coronavirus does not spread by consumption of chicken, mutton or seafood.
Why is the fear of animal transmission?
Animals have been an integral part of human life from time immemorial. From providing food to maintaining ecological balance they have had a varied role to play in human life. Animal health has both direct and indirect impacts on human health. When a new zoonotic outbreak occurs, scientists rush to trace the species the infection originated from. Often the infection jumps from its initial animal carrier to an intermediate host species, which then transmits the virus to humans.
It has been presumed from the research done so far that the infection originated from bats and intermediate host may be snake or pangolin. The research has been going on about the same and no confirmed epidemiology or treatment has been found yet. But it can be said with certainty that there has been no correlation of goats and poultry being carrier of corona virus.
To clear out the rumors which are being spread about Corona Virus, on social media platforms, Maharashtra Animal and Fishery Science University (MAFSU) had held a press meet and informed the population that consumption of meat, chicken and eggs are not harmful and it is very safe. They told that currently, as a university (MAFSU) we are spreading awareness among people about the prevention of COVID-19 and breaking myths associated with it. Significantly, we are emphasizing that there is no correlation between eating foods of animal origin including chicken, goat meat and fish. We have been conducting camps in villages and schools for the same.
What are the COVID-19 rumors that should be debunked?
Poultry meat or any other product of animal origin does not lead to the spread of COVID-19. It is safe to consume, the only thing is that it should be thoroughly cooked. Neither are pet animals involved in transmission. As of today, there is no vaccine or cure available in the market. Rumors linked to its zoonotic nature need to be stopped as it has unnecessarily affected the poultry and meat industry to a great extent.
